Getting Started
Overview
Here is an overview of the steps:
- Configure the DSN for Workday data in the CData ODBC Driver for Workday with the necessary connection properties.
- Set up the ODBC connection in Lazarus by configuring the TSQLConnector, TSQLQuery, TDataSource, and TDBGrid components with the required details.
- Test the connection to Workday data by writing sample code on the Main form.
- Compile and run the application to verify the successful integration and display of live Workday data.
Prerequisites
Before starting, ensure you have the following:
- Lazarus IDE (version 3.4 recommended). Download from here.
- CData ODBC Driver for Workday. Download and try the latest version from here.
Configure the Workday DSN Using the CData ODBC Driver
To start, configure the DSN (Data Source Name) for Workday data in your system using the CData ODBC Driver for Workday. Download and install a 30-day free trial with all the features from here.
Once installed, launch the ODBC Data Source Administrator:
- On Windows: Search for ODBC Data Source Administrator in the Start menu and open the application.
- On Mac: Open Applications, go to Utilities, and select ODBC Manager.
- On Linux: Use the command line to launch ODBC Data Source Administrator or use unixODBC if installed.

Once launched, double-click on the CData Workday data Source and enter the required values to establish a connection:
To connect to Workday, users need to find the Tenant and BaseURL and then select their API type.
Obtaining the BaseURL and Tenant
To obtain the BaseURL and Tenant properties, log into Workday and search for "View API Clients." On this screen, you'll find the Workday REST API Endpoint, a URL that includes both the BaseURL and Tenant.
The format of the REST API Endpoint is: https://domain.com/subdirectories/mycompany, where:
- https://domain.com/subdirectories/ is the BaseURL.
- mycompany (the portion of the url after the very last slash) is the Tenant.
Using ConnectionType to Select the API
The value you use for the ConnectionType property determines which Workday API you use. See our Community Article for more information on Workday connectivity options and best practices.

Authentication
Your method of authentication depends on which API you are using.
- WQL, Reports as a Service, REST: Use OAuth authentication.
- SOAP: Use Basic or OAuth authentication.

Create a New GUI Project
- Launch the Lazarus IDE.
- Navigate to File > New > Application to create a new GUI project with a Main form.

Add Required Connection Components to the Form
- Go to View > Component > Palette and check the Keep open at the bottom-left to keep the Components window persistently open.

Configure the TSQLConnector Component

- Double-click on the Main Form to open up the Source Editor.
